PM Update: Lower humidity offers cooler night, and a warm but pleasant Friday

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Humidity and heat were down today, but the city and urban hotspots near Interstate 95 still managed to clip 90. Most other spots were mid- and upper 80s under lots of sun. Humidity levels continue to dwindle through tonight which should help get temperatures a couple degrees lower than this morning. Those few degrees could matter Friday when we make another attempt to end the ongoing 90s and higher streak.

Through tonight: A warm but decent evening with the lower humidity, especially as the sun gets low on the horizon. Nice tonight. Mid-60s to near 70 should do it for lows.

Tomorrow (Friday): Plan on a few more clouds compared with today. We should give it another go to break the streak of at 90 or above in the city. However, I wouldn’t bet on it, given how that has gone lately. Mainly mid- and upper 80s as winds turn to come back out of the south during the day.

Now it’s a dry heat: We don’t often reference days that are 91 or higher, but today made 11 of those in a row. An average year might expect a run of about seven such days. The 11-day streak is the longest since 12 in 2016, and that is in the top-eight for longest such streaks in Washington. In 1980, there were 17 days in a row with it reaching at least 91, the longest on record.
